20 Years of SANTA FE – the evolution of an icon.
Hyundai introduced the first-generation SANTA FE in the year 2000, making us one of the pioneers in the SUV market. Now celebrating its 20th anniversary, the hugely successful Santa Fe has become an icon for the brand. Take a look back with us at how our first SUV has evolved over the years.
First-generation 2000-2006.
The 1st generation featured a rugged, yet refined look and was substantially longer and wider than many of its rivals, emphasizing its practicality for off-road driving.
Second-generation 2006 – 2012.
The 2nd generation featured more power, more space, and an updated safety system while offering significantly improved handling for a range of driving and weather conditions.
Third-generation 2012 – 2018.

Designing the new look – from sketch to the show room.
At the beginning of the design process, the initial sketches are usually no more than rough drafts drawn with pencils on paper. For the new SANTA FE, the design team focused on achieving a calmer, more sophisticated form language. It underlines the wide stance and strength of the new design to achieve harmony and refinement.

Bluelink always keeps an eye on your car. If someone tries to break into your all-new Tucson – the door lock is compromised and the door is opened – it will send a push-notification to your smartphone.

Vehicle Status.
Need petrol? Just check the app. Enjoy remote access to the status of your car at any given moment, including fuel remaining, doors open/closed or locked/unlocked and windows or boot open/closed.
Connected Routing.
Connected routing means that the route is no longer calculated by the processor inside the navigation device, but by a powerful server inside the Hyundai cloud. Why is that better? Because it allows for more accurate traffic forecasting, more precise times of arrival, and more reliable route recalculations.
Last Mile Navigation.
You might have to park your new Santa Fe somewhere before you reach your actual destination. If you are within 200 m – 2 km, you can hand over navigation from the car to the Bluelink app. With augmented reality, your phone will then guide you exactly where you want to go.

New engine line-up for more efficiency and power.
Enjoy more efficiency with more power. The new Santa Fe features a completely new engine line-up with the new “R” diesel with lower CO2 emissions, and is the first Hyundai in Europe to go on sale with the new ‘Smartstream’ hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain. The diesel engine is paired with a new 8-speed wet double-clutch transmission (8DCT) available for enhanced acceleration and improved fuel efficiency.
New 8DCT: 8-speed wet double-clutch transmission.
The new 8-speed wet double-clutch transmission (8DCT), available with the diesel engine, offers the smooth shifting of a conventional automatic while enhancing efficiency over dry dual clutch transmissions.
1.6 T-GDI turbo hybrid.
Delivering a combined output of 230 PS, the hybrid version of the new Santa Fe is powered by a dynamic tandem of the new 1.6-litre T-GDi ‘Smartstream’ turbocharged petrol direct injection engine and a 44.2 kW electric motor, which draws its power from a 1.49 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery. It is available with two-wheel or four-wheel drive.
1.6 T-GDi plug-in Hybrid.
The plug-in hybrid version, available in early 2021, is powered by the new 1.6-litre T-GDi ‘SmartStream’ turbocharged petrol direct injection engine paired with a 66.9 kW electric motor, which draws its power from a 13.8 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery. This variant will be available with four-wheel drive. The total power output is 265 PS.
2.2 SmartStream Diesel.
The four-cylinder ‘SmartStream’ diesel engine produces 202 PS and 440 Nm torque and is available with two or four-wheel drive. The new engine block consists of aluminum instead of steel, for a weight reduction of 19.5 kg. Many other components have been improved as well, leading to better fuel efficiency. Furthermore, it has been equipped with a new 2,200 bar injection system for improved overall engine performance.
Drive and terrain mode selector.
Snow or sand? Sport or Eco? You choose. You can easily switch drive modes to suit conditions – and your mood! Select Sport mode for enhanced performance with modified throttle response, shift points and steering effort. Eco mode delivers peak fuel efficiency with modified acceleration, shift points and air conditioning performance. Select Comfort mode for regular performance with good efficiency.
Snow mode.
Optimises control by minimising wheel slip in slippery and snow-covered road conditions by adjusting engine torque, gear shift pattern, traction control and all-wheel drive torque distribution.
Sand mode.
Optimises smooth take off and performance in order to drive in soft and high-resistant road conditions by adjusting engine torque, gear shift pattern, traction control and all-wheel drive torque distribution.
Mud mode.
Optimises relevant performance in order to drive in slippery and high-resistant road conditions by adjusting engine torque, gear shift pattern, traction control and all-wheel drive torque distribution.
HTRAC™ All-wheel drive system.
Bad weather? Hairpin curves? No problem. The new Santa Fe is available with the innovative HTRAC™ All-Wheel Drive system for optimum handling and cornering performance – which makes driving slippery city streets and bumpy country roads safer and much more relaxed.
Comfort Mode.
Comfort mode offers improved stability. Under slippery conditions, the system automatically distributes power to all four wheels.
Eco Mode.
ECO mode provides improved fuel efficiency by sending power to the front wheels only. Under slippery conditions, power is automatically distributed to all four wheels.
Sport Mode.
Sport mode delivers improved acceleration with up to 50 % torque distributed to the rear wheels. Under slippery conditions, power is automatically shifted to all four wheels.
Smart Mode.
Smart mode adapts to your driving style and road conditions in real time, automatically switching between Eco, Sport and Comfort to deliver optimal performance.
All-new vehicle platform.
The new Santa Fe is based on the all-new third-generation Hyundai vehicle platform, which allows for significant improvements in performance, handling, fuel efficiency and safety.

New state-of-the-art Hyundai SmartSense safety features and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems like Highway Drive Assist and Parking Rear Collision Avoidance bring the new Santa Fe in line with competitors from the premium class. There’s even a new Remote Smart Parking Assist that will park your car for you.
Highway Drive Assist (HDA).
For the first time, the new Santa Fe has been equipped with Highway Driving Assist (HDA). The feature is a combination of Lane Following Assist and Smart Cruise Control, utilizing sensors and map data to ensure safe operation as well as to automatically adjust speed in limited environments. A special button on the steering wheel allows the driver to activate HDA with just one click.
Remote Smart Park Assist (RSPA).
The new Santa Fe can remotely park or retrieve itself from a parking space. The system can even back into a parking spot by itself at the touch of a button.
Reverse Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist (PCA-R).
This new feature uses rear and side radars to detect obstacles when reversing, issuing a warning and applying the brakes, if necessary, to avoid a collision.
Lane Following Assist (LFA).
The new Santa Fe Hybrid features Lane Following Assist (LFA). When activated, it keeps the car centred in its lane at speeds between 0 and 200 km/h on motorways and city streets.
Blind-Spot Collision-avoidance Assist (BCA).
Using radar sensors in the lower rear bumper and front camera, the system warns you of traffic in the blind spot area. Should you set the turn indicator in such a situation, it will sound an acoustic alert and brake to prevent collision.
Rear Cross-traffic Collision-avoidance Assist (RCCA).
When reversing out of areas with low visibility, the system not only warns the driver if vehicles approach from the side – it also applies the brakes automatically.
Forward Collision-avoidance Assist (FCA).
The FCA system automatically brakes when it detects sudden braking by the car ahead or detects pedestrians or cyclists in your path.
Blind Spot View Monitor (BVM)
Now you can see the rearward left- and right-hand side views of the new Santa Fe on a screen in the digital cluster. The cameras are activated by the use of the turn indicator during lane changes.
Safe exit assist.
This clever feature prevents accidents by detecting vehicles approaching from behind and temporarily locking the rear child lock doors, so that passengers can only exit the car when it is safe to do so.
Rear occupant alert.
Ultrasonic sensors monitor the rear seats: When the driver exits the vehicle, an in-dash message pops up. If it detects movement after exiting, it will honk the horn and flash the lights.
Protecting you and your loved ones
The new Santa Fe is designed to protect you and your passengers. Next to six airbags: two front, two side and two curtain airbags – significant improvements in collision safety have been achieved thanks to the all-new Hyundai vehicle platform. It enables the car to better absorb the impact in the event of a collision while at the same time minimising the deformation of the passenger space.
